OPINION
Manchester United fans certainly pulled no punches in their assessment of Romelu Lukaku’s dreadful performance against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The Belgian striker looked dreadfully out of his depth throughout the clash, and time and time again seems to affirm the exact accusations that are so frequently thrown at him. His first touch looked appalling, his fitness was questionable at best, and yet again his bulky frame seemed to hinder his once razor sharp movement. The 25-year-old liked like a shadow of the player he was when he first signed for United, and honestly, it’s hard to see how he’ll ever be that player again. At this stage his confidence must be shot, and while it is decent of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to give him a run out, it’s surely not the best thing for his side’s top four ambitions. It’s sad, but at the moment Lukaku looks like a very expensive mistake, and unless he can rekindle some kind of spark soon, it surely won’t be long before he becomes a very expensive departure too. There’s no doubting that on his day he is world class, but it hasn’t been his day for several months now, and things probably aren’t going to get any better any time soon.
