There was once a time when Leighton Baines could justifiably be considered as one of the most impressive left-backs in the Premier League.

Defensively sound with a keen attacking eye and a wand of a left foot, he was, in many ways, one of the first properly modern full-backs to grace the top flight.

In recent times, however, he has struggled to register many first team minutes, and on his first league start at Goodison Park since August, the signs were that the 34-year-old fans’ favourite may not be an effective option for Marco Silva’s Everton anymore.

The former England international was okay against Huddersfield Town in midweek, but faced with a rampant Wolves side he endured a torrid first half before withdrawing with a knock after 37 minutes.

The most disappointing moment of his display undoubtedly came when he conceded the early penalty that led to the visitors taking the lead, but in many ways that was just the tip of the iceberg.

None of his teammates exactly covered themselves in glory either, but Baines looked sluggish and off-colour for the duration of his outing, and ultimately appeared to be a shadow his former self.

The ex-Wigan Athletic man was never a scintillating athlete, but he was always full of running and seemed to never stop with his constant movement up and down the left touchline.

Against Wolves, however, a lot of his attacking instinct seemed to have left him, while his defensive work looked shaky and targetable.

It will be a sad admission to make given how brilliant the local lad has been for Everton, but his time in blue must surely be coming to an end.
