Danny Drinkwater won’t travel to Malmo with the rest of the Chelsea squad after aggravating a tendon problem in training, according to ESPN journalist Liam Twomey.

Twomey made the claim on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning, with Chelsea set to play Malmo in the Europa league on Thursday night.

Drinkwater has only made one appearance for Chelsea this season, in the Community Shield.

OPINION

Drinkwater is having a torrid time at Chelsea and it was a surprise when he didn’t make a move in January. He hasn’t played all season since the Community Shield, although he was added to the Europa League squad at the end of the winter window when it became clear he was staying. That hasn’t worked out so well for him, and he becomes the only player to miss out on the trip to Malmo. It’s a big comedown after his Premier League heroics with Chelsea, but the big problem is finding a club that would be willing to match the wages Chelsea are paying him – reported to be £90k-a-week. It doesn’t look likely that he’ll play much of a part in the rest of the season, with the Europa League starting to reach the meaningful stage. He still has three-and-a-half years left on his contract and at the age of 28 if he wants to keep playing he needs to look for a move in the summer.
