OPINION
Leeds fans had their feet up this weekend with their team not playing because of the FA Cup. But, if they were hoping that one or both of their nearest rivals would slip up, they were left sorely disappointed, as both Sheffield United and Norwich went wild, thrashing Reading and Bolton respectively.
With things as tight as they are, every goal could be valuable come the end of the season, and Leeds fans were left thoroughly disheartened as they watched eight goals fly in without response – four a piece for Norwich and Sheffield United.
It could have been worse, with Norwich missing a penalty, incredibly making it six out of seven they’ve missed this season.
As it was though, many Leeds fans poured onto Twitter saying the same thing – promotion could come down to goal difference this season and their side isn’t scoring enough.
Leeds were top of the Championship at 2.59pm but less than 10 minutes later they were in third, outside of the automatic promotion spots, albeit on goal difference from Sheffield United.
Leeds fans weren’t happy but the important thing is that their fate is still in their own hands. They have a game in hand and could go back to the top of the table if they beat Bolton next week.
However, goal difference could be the same as a point come the end of the season and Leeds haven’t been battering teams like their rivals did today, despite dominating games.
And, as it stands, the table doesn’t make for pretty reading – here are the best reactions from fed-up Leeds fans:
Sheffield United January signing Gary Madine 2 goals today
Where was #lufc January signings?
Could be the difference for the top 2……— Whiteandright Americans Out (@Lonewhite101) February 16, 2019

With how tight it is between the top 3 and West Brom chasing, goal difference is looking very likely it’s going to decide on positions each team finishes and we’re falling behind ? #LUFC https://t.co/n6hbLKf12o

Knew we would be third but we are now 7 goals behind Sheffield. We NEED to batter somebody to try and boost the goal difference #lufc

Sheff Utd 4 up, Norwich 3 up, WBA 2 up. All gaining a superior goal difference on us. We really need to stop wasting so many chances, especially when we win. #lufc

Only problem with Norwich and sheff smashing Bolton and reading. We HAVE to do the same. Goal difference will be massive #lufc

Need to pump Bolton and QPR and make up some goal difference. #lufc

This is why I share Bielsa’s concerns with our lack of scoring; Norwich and Blades know how to bag goals, as shown today already. Goal difference will play a role I’m sure come the end of the season. @LUFC #LUFC

Not going to lie…starting to get a bit worried about goal difference. It’s going to place a massive part of the run in to the end of the season ? #LUFC
