Newcastle United midfielder Ki Sung-yueng has given an update on his return from injury, suggesting that he isn’t feeling any pain.

The South Korean has been out of action since he was sent home early from the Asian Cup, but did play for 45 minutes in the Magpies’ 1-1 friendly draw with CSKA Moscow on Saturday.

Speaking to the club’s official website, as quoted by the Chronicle, he said: “For me it was a great chance to play, fitness-wise because I was back from injury and I got some time to play good football against a good team.

“It was a good experience having a week in Spain and hopefully we are prepared for our next game.

“I don’t feel 100 per cent yet but there is no pain from my hamstring injury. Hopefully I will get better and keep pushing in training.

“This game, playing 45 minutes, helped me get more fit.”

OPINION

Having Ki back will be a massive boost for Newcastle United. The midfielder was arguably the Magpies’ most consistent performer before he went away on international duty, and it came as a hammer blow when it was confirmed that he would be unavailable in the aftermath of his Asian Cup injury. Fortunately, Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden have really stepped up to the plate, but you would still fancy Ki to come back into the side and play a crucial role in the Toon Army’ ongoing battle to pull away from the drop zone. The South Korean is an intelligent mover of the ball facilitates those around him, and it’s obvious that he would make a fine partner for the young Longstaff in particular. Things have turned out pretty okay for Rafa Benitez, who must have been genuinely concerned by his lack of midfield options when Ki was ruled out. Now, however, things look a lot better for the Magpies, and Ki’s return will only enhance that feeling.
