Chris Sutton believes that Celtic’s European form constitutes a problem for Brendan Rodgers, and has suggested that the manager could leave the Hoops in the summer.

The Bhoys lost 2-0 to Valencia in midweek to leave them with a mountain to climb in the Europa League, and Sutton has suggested that some of their continental issues stem from the manager prioritising domestic glory.

Speaking on BT Sport, Sutton said: “I think he’s got a massive problem in Europe now, and I think a lot of Celtic fans have cottoned on to it.

“His European record, Brendan Rodgers, isn’t very good at all. I think there are a lot of Celtic fans who are thinking that he’s concentrating on the treble and he will be off in the summer.

“I think Brendan owes it to the fans to come out and tell everybody that he wants to stay next season because if he does go, Celtic are in a mess. Short term loans going, no centre half pairing, it’s going to be a massive problem in the summer.”

OPINION

Sutton is never one to mince his words and he’s struck again here by going all in on Brendan Rodgers. The truth is that Celtic find themselves in a uniquely odd situation. For years now they have been by far the most powerful side in Scotland, with this season probably representing the first point in a while where you could make an argument that they face a genuine title challenge, but that has allowed them to stagnate, and ultimately means they are destined to struggle in Europe. Why would the board pour exorbitant amounts of money into the side year after year when they know they are all but nailed on to win a domestic treble on the off chance that they might go a couple of rounds further in Europe? They short answer is they wouldn’t, and haven’t, and now the gulf between the Hoops and a side like Valencia is gaping and plain to see.
