It was not meant to end like this at Tottenham.

After a month on the sidelines, Harry Kane was supposed to come back and fire Spurs to a comfortable win over Burnley that kept them within spitting distance of the top two.

The England captain did get his customary goal, but Sean Dyche’s side seemingly hadn’t read the script, and recorded a thumping 2-1 win over their high-flying visitors.

It’s hard to eek out any kind of silver lining from a disappointment like that, but at the very least it should put to bed once and for all the ridiculous notion that Spurs are a one man team.

Their talismanic striker is undoubtedly the most important cog in their attacking machine, but they have managed to find a rhythm without him, and have thrived in their results.

For Kane to them come back into the side as they record a loss that could potentially derail their entire season, it would suggest that they are not as reliant on him as everybody might think, and could even show that Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to throw him straight back into the side straight away might have even disrupted Spurs.

It took them a while to get used to playing without Kane, and equally, having him back at their disposal could be a novelty that takes a while to settle.

Either way, it acts as a ringing endorsement of just how well Spurs have adapted without their captain.
