Manager and pundit Ian Holloway has named Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min as one of his top five Premier League players of the season.

The South Korean international has enjoyed a remarkable campaign in North London and has hit new heights recently in the absence of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Former Premier League manager Holloway told talkSPORT that Son was in his top five top flight performers this term. Joining Son were Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

Calls for Son to be considered in the Player of the Year hunt have intensified in recent weeks with the 26-year-old hitting top form since returning from the Asian Cup.

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Son’s play over the past few months merits him a place in the Player of the Season discussion. It’s unlikely, though, that he’ll win the award itself unless Tottenham were somehow to win the Premier League. At the moment the frontrunners are very much the Liverpool and City contingent. Aguero has elevated himself towards the run of the queue in recent weeks, but Van Dijk has to be the favourite at this moment in time. Holloway including Rashford would appear to be a bit of recency bias. You can’t simply ignore the fact that Rahsford did next to nothing under Jose Mourinho for the first three or four months of the season. He’s come alive recently, but not to the extent that he should be considered in contention for this prestigious prize. No, Van Dijk, Aguero and even Sterling are the frontrunners. Beyond them, though, Son is definitely the dark horse to watch.
