OPINION
There is no doubting Tyrone Mings’ quality as a defender, but the 25-year-old has had a dreadful run of luck with injuries and had found himself way down the pecking order at Bournemouth before he secured a loan move to Aston Villa earlier this week. The Villans have been crying out for a new central defender all season, and on the evidence of his debut against Reading on Saturday, Mings could be the answer to their prayers. The centre-back is an imposing physical unit but also possesses an intelligence and natural reading of the game that could be a huge asset to Villa. Aside from anything else, Dean Smith’s side lack consistency, and having a solid defender marshalling his the backline like Mings promises to do could go a long way to helping to build a good, string foundation through the spine of their team. Only time will tell if he is a success, but if Mings keeps up this level of performance he could be a real weapon in the fight for a play-off place. Now Villa just need to make sure he stays fit and firing, and that those around him are able to lead by his example.

Mings looking a natural at CB – the rest of the team looking the same. Villa playing with nine men in effect with Taylor and Hutton in the starting 11. Whelan and Hourihane as your midfield core ain't setting the world alight.

Mings looks decent. We’ve been pretty scrappy again and I really don’t like the pairing of Whelan and Hourihane. Too leggy.
