Robbie Savage has made a cheeky jibe against struggling Aston Villa, suggesting that it will be a while before their fans see a trophy again.

Villa slumped to a 0-0 draw against Reading on Saturday to leave them ninth in the Championship table, one place behind their bitter rivals Birmingham City on goal difference.

Ex-Blues man Savage has made no secret of his eagerness to taunt the former Premier League mainstays in the past, and took another opportunity to do so before Sunday night’s NFL Super Bowl.

When The Mirror’s editor-in-chief Lloyd Embley tweeted a photo of himself next to the prestigious trophy, Savage retweeted his post with the comment: “I’d touch it mate it will be a while before a Villa fan sees a trophy again.”

OPINION

Savage is well-known wind up merchant, and his words will be cutting deep with Villa fans because they will know in their heart of hearts that he is probably right. The club should really be pushing for automatic promotion this season, even with the strength of the opposition around them in the Championship, but a poor start under Steve Bruce, and then an inability to put matches to bed under Dean Smith, has cost them dearly so far this season. There is every chance that they could still make the play-offs but you have to say that on the strength of recent performances, that is looking more and more unlikely. Even getting back up the Premier League, for a club of Villa’s stature is arguably not enough. They should be challenging for a European berth and looking at a decent cup run every year, but the days of that kind of ambition are still a long way off at the moment.
