OPINION

As far as debuts go, scoring what turned out to be the winning goal in front of your home fans after coming on as a substitute is about as good as it gets. Add in the fact that it was Malian centre-back Molla Wague who did the honours, and it makes the feat even more remarkable. The 27-year-old who signed from Udinese on loan during the January window will have made many a friend in Nottingham this afternoon with his unlikely heroics, and in terms of arrivals, his couldn’t have gone much better. Forest fans should be under no illusions, however, Wague is not the 20 goal-a-season striker they have been crying out for, but on the basis of his first performance, he could be a fine addition to Martin O’Neill’s defence. Forest are one of a plethora of teams who are there or thereabouts when it comes to the play-off race, and they now sit just five points behind sixth-place Bristol City. Getting to where they want to be is going to be a slug, especially given the quality of some of the sides around them, but if they can take Saturday’s result as a foundation, and learn to play the kind of gritty, resolute game that O’Neill will demand of them, they have a very decent chance.
