OPINION

There are very few teams in the Championship who are as frustrating to watch as Aston Villa at the moment. Fans must never know which side is going to turn up – the imperious attacking force who can role teams over with ease, or the blunted team that struggles to unpick even the most moth-eaten of defences. Unfortunately for Villa, it was the latter that made an appearance against lowly Reading on Saturday afternoon, and chief amongst their disappointing attacking talent was winger Anwar El Ghazi. The 23-year-old looked bright early on but quickly ran out of steam and imagination, and spent the majority of his afternoon making very little headway whatsoever. If that wasn’t bad enough, the young man then made a fool of himself with one of the most ridiculously theatrical, and ultimately unconvincing, dives you are likely to see this season. It really summed up a poor outing for the Dutchman, and begs the question as to whether he might have been more successful had he committed the same amount of effort to unravelling a resolute Reading backline. Villa have all the tools to make a real push for the play-offs, but unless they start to bury games like this one, they will fall short of their target.
