Jamie Carragher was blown away by Michael Antonio’s “fantastic” goal against Liverpool in West Ham’s 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders at the London Stadium on Monday night.

Antonio equalised for the Hammers in the 28th minute after a cleverly worked set-piece that appeared to be straight off the training ground.

Carragher couldn’t get enough of how good the Irons winger’s goal was against his former club during his half-time analysis on Sky Sports Main Event.

“Antonio’s in, that is a brilliant finish. Against a goalkeeper as good as Alisson, its absolutely fantastic,” said Carragher during on Monday Night Football [08:50pm].

“But that is exactly what West Ham deserved.”

OPINION

It was definitely a very well-worked goal by West Ham and even though they have clearly practiced that move in training, it took a few players to do the exact right thing in order to pull it off. Mark Noble played a key role in blocking Naby Keita from tracking Antonio’s run into the penalty area, while Felipe Anderson’s pass had to be perfectly weighted for the on-rushing winger. After they were both pulled off, it was down to Antonio to stick the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, and he did so brilliantly as he stuck the ball into the bottom corner. Manuel Pellegrini would surely have been happy about that and it was no less than what West Ham deserved after they were clearly the better side in the first half and Sadio Mane’s goal should not have been awarded due to an offside in the build-up. West Ham have been such an odd side this season, but they have been an absolute joy to watch at times.
