West Brom are in talks over a loan move for Sunderland midfielder Brian Oviedo ahead of transfer deadline day, according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

The north east correspondent for the broadcaster claims on his personal Twitter account that the Baggies have launched discussions for the experienced central midfielder, having played 20 times across all competitions for the Black Cats this season.

The 28-year-old has 50 caps under his belt for Costa Rica, while he has also featured 34 times in the Championship and 60 times in the Premier League during stints at Everton and Sunderland.

Good move for West Brom?

What an utterly bizarre move this promises to be.

Left back is not necessarily a huge issue for the Baggies but it is obviously somewhere that Darren Moore feels could be strengthened – but is Oviedo really the right option for their promotion push.

He has not even been playing that consistently for Sunderland in League One and so to think that he could make a difference in the second tier is a real head scratcher.

His experience could prove useful between now and the end of the season and so a loan makes sense – but the Hawthorns faithful might be disappointed with a lack of ambition.

Likely to happen?

In and out of the Sunderland side, the Black Cats are unlikely to miss him too much and could do with getting his wages off the books.

If talks have started it means something could happen and it seems to be a deal which suits all parties – even if it does seem like a strange swoop from Moore’s men.
