Chris Sutton has destroyed Joe Worrall for a “horrible” error that led to Eamonn Brophy scoring in Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday night.

Jermain Defoe had put the Gers into an early lead, but Killie were soon level when Worrall gifted possession to Brophy on the edge of his own box, leaving him with a one-on-one against Allan McGregor that was slotted into the net.

Sutton has suggested that Steven Gerrard will be furious with the Nottingham Forest loanee.

“If Rangers want to win titles they need to be ruthless at both ends,” said Sutton during BT Sport 1’s live half-time analysis on Wednesday night [08:38pm].

“It was a horrible, horrible error.”

He added: “It’s sloppy. I’m sure Steven Gerrard will be reading the riot act at half-time.”

OPINION

Gerrard needs Connor Goldson back as soon as possible because it is pretty clear that he is Rangers’ best centre-back. Worrall had a stinker on Wednesday night, but Gareth McAuley was also unimpressive alongside the loaned-in centre-back. There is also a massive case for Nikola Katic to get back into the side. Gerrard’s decision to axe him from his starting line-up earlier in the season, in favour of Worrall, was a headscratcher and it Rangers’ defence hasn’t been as good since. Katic may take some time to settle down again but at the moment, him and Goldson have to be the Gers’ best centre-back pairing. As Sutton says, Gerrard will be furious with Worrall for that mishap in the first half. There was simply no reason for it at that stage of the game. Luckily the January transfer window is still open. Will Gerrard be tempted to sign a new centre-back after Worrall’s shocker in Ayrshire?
