Leeds fans were sent into a tailspin on Friday afternoon after a Sun journalist said that Leeds were interested in signing Wolves forward Ivan Cavaleiro.

His claims were given more credence after Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay said that Leeds had looked at him at Christmas.

However, there was cold water to come and it was poured by local Wolves journalist Tim Spiers, who seemingly put the report to bed.

In a tweet on his personal Twitter page Spiers, the Wolves correspondent for local paper the Express & Star, said, “I gather Wolves have received no approach and wouldn’t encourage one as he’s not for sale.”

Spiers delivered his update on Friday afternoon.

OPINION

This one seemed to be too good to be true. Cavaleiro would have been a brilliant signing for Leeds but Spiers, who is Phil Hay’s equivalent for Wolves, is ultra reliable and this draws a thick black line through the possibility of the 25-year-old winger joining. Leeds do need fall-back options and it’s very possible that Leeds are thinking of rekindling their interest in the former Portugal international. However, it looks like he’s not for sale now, in much the same way Leeds were told he wasn’t available when they enquired at Christmas. Meanwhile, their hunt for a winger continues with Swansea as they look to land number one target Daniel James. Hay’s mention of “fall-back options” won’t please Leeds fans who may now be looking at the prospect of not landing the Swansea player and not having time to get a deal done for anyone else. That would be an anti-climactic end to the January transfer window.
