Championship side Swansea City are tracking Rangers enforcer Ross McCrorie and could make a January move to sign him, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 20-year-old is one of Swans manager Graham Potter’s primary transfer targets, but that they are yet to make their interest official.

The Welsh team will have the player watched, however, when Gers take on Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup following the winter break.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard rates McCrorie highly and is said to have no intention of selling a player who impressed against Celtic at the end of last month.

Good move for Rangers?

Not really. McCrorie is well regarded within the Ibrox set up and is someone who has featured with more and more regularity this season. Indeed, he has started the team’s last three games in the Scottish Premiership. He really impressed in the win over the Hoops, and considering both his age and his ability it would be a major mistake for Rangers to allow him to leave the club. Gerrard is obviously fond of him and, with the club making major strides forward, there is really no reason for Gers to allow him to depart. At 20 years of age McCrorie is someone who could anchor this Rangers team for the next decade plus, while his versatility makes him an extremely valuable asset. To lose all that to a team like Swansea would be nonsensical.

Likely to happen?

Well Swansea need to make their interest official first, but it sounds as if Gerrard will give this one short shrift. And, really, why wouldn’t he? Rangers are in a position now where they don’t need to sell players to Championship sides, they’re bigger than that. Don’t expect McCrorie to be leaving Ibrox any time soon.
