Ally McCoist savaged “absolutely shocking” Joe Worrall for his error that gifted Kilmarnock an equaliser in Rangers’ 2-1 defeat on Wednesday night.

The centre-back, on loan from Nottingham Forest, was caught out by Eamonn Brophy who raced through to score in the first-half of the clash at Rugby Park.

Speaking on BT Sport, McCoist said: “It was an absolutely shocking piece of defending. I would’ve possibly have taken him off after that. After that goal, Rangers were all over the place.”

OPINION

A harsh verdict from McCoist on the England Under-21 international, but not an unfair one. With Connor Goldson out injured, Steven Gerrard overlooked Nikola Katic and paired Worrall and Gareth McAuley in central defence. Katic is no speed machine, but he has greater mobility than the two short-term signings, and Gerrard’s decision failed to pay dividends. Bears would have been worried when news of Goldson’s unavailability emerged. They were right to be. The former Brighton defender has been the team’s rock this season, and the foundation of their title charge. McAuley is 38 and has the turning speed of a cruiseliner, while Worrall is frustratingly inconsistent. For every good game, he follows up with a ropey one. This was certainly in the latter category, and his blunder against Kilmarnock led to a nervousness among the visiting defence that led the rot to set in.
