Rangers striker Eduardo Herrera has secured a loan move to Mexican club Necaxa until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old had just completed a loan at Santos Laguna but there’s no place for him in Steven Gerrard’s Ranger side.

The news was confirmed on the official Club Necaxa website on Tuesday evening.

Rangers fans might have forgotten all about Herrera, who, along with Carlos Pena are bad reminders of the disastrous Pedro Caixinha reign. Both players are on substantial wages and getting them off the books in this January window will be a big financial boost to the club. Herrera scored just two goals in 24 appearances for Rangers, and only scored five from 31 games for Santos Laguna. The former Mexican international was signed after scoring 56 goals in 186 games for UNAM Pumas but he could never reproduce that form at Ibrox. Thinking about Herrera makes you realise how far things have progressed under Steven Gerrard. He’s just brought in Jermain Defoe and he’s a proper goal-scorer who the fans will be looking forward to seeing when the Scottish games resumes in a couple of weeks. He could easily get 10+ goals between now and the end of the season, and those goals could fire Rangers towards their 55th title.
