Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been dealt a potential blow as a report revealed that Charlton are optimistic over how talks with forward Karlan Grant are going.

talkSPORT exclusively reported on Wednesday that Charlton were confident that they could hold on to the 21-year-old hotshot as the mood around talks about his new contract was positive.

The broadcaster claimed that League One side remain locked in negotiations with Grant and his representation with the pressure on them to reach an agreement as there are only six months left on his current deal.

The attacker has been in red-hot form in front of goal this season as he scored 13 goals in 26 league outings and generally looks too much for defences to handle.

Grant’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed as according to The Scottish Sun  the Gers wanted him to sign a pre-contract with them as Gerrard wanted a long-term replacement for Alfredo Morelos and clearly thought the Charlton forward fitted the bill.

The national newspaper shared how Rangers scouts had checked Grant out and how the club were so eager in their pursuit that they wanted to have a deal wrapped up for him as soon as possible so he that he could rock up straight away in the summer.

However it seems Gerrard is going to have to go back to the drawing board as the report about the mood surrounding Grant’s talks with Charlton suggest that he isn’t going anywhere.

It is a blow for Gerrard as prolific promising forwards are hard to find, and even harder to find with expiring contracts, so he would no doubt be disappointed by Charlton’s apparent confidence over keeping their young attacker.
