Barry Ferguson has claimed Rangers can steamroller Celtic and snatch the SPL title if they sign Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana this season.

The former Ibrox midfielder revealed he is starting to believe the Scottish giants can follow up their headline signings of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis this month with an even more unlikely deal for Lallana.

Ferguson is in no doubt about what impact the England international would have on Steven Gerrard’s side as he gave his verdict.

Ferguson told the Football Show on PLZ Soccer: “See if this was six, eight weeks ago? I know Defoe was mentioned and obviously Davis, these two signings have happened, and now I’m beginning to believe Adam Lallana.

“I think he’s a top, top player. If Rangers get him, they’ve got an even better chance to snatch the title away from Celtic.

“The guy is genuine quality. I’ve watched him long enough in a Liverpool jersey. The guy’s got fantastic ability, can score a goal and is an England international.

“It’s difficult to go into that Liverpool team with that top three that they’ve got just now. But he is a top, top player. If Rangers pull that off, I’ll need to give them a handshake.”

OPINION

Given that Lallana earns £120,000-a-week at Liverpool (source: Metro) and Jurgen Klopp has spoken recently of how he expects the 30-year-old to explode in the second half of the season, it is difficult, verging on impossible, to see the player joining Rangers in the January window. Sure, Lallana has been a fringe player for the Merseyside giants in the last two seasons, partly due to a series of serious injuries, but he still has a huge amount to offer and it would not make sense for Klopp to loan him out if he has been blown away by the player in training, as he recently claimed. Liverpool are going to need all their best players at various times over the next few months in what is shaping up to be a thrilling title battle with Manchester City. Signing Defoe and Davis, players in their mid-30s and who aren’t playing at lower profile Premier League clubs, is one thing. Landing a current England international from Liverpool who could still have a half-decade at the top is another, entirely.
