Barry Ferguson believes that new Rangers signing Steven Davis has the ability to walk straight into Steven Gerrard’s starting XI with absolute ease.

He described the veteran as an “absolute dream” to play alongside before heaping praise on Davis’ work rate and his “desire” to win, pinpointing them as reasons why he should make the line-up with no problems.

Ferguson reckons that the 34-year-old – who has joined the Gers on a six month loan deal from Southampton – is capable of establishing himself as not only the best midfielder at the club, but as the best in the whole of the Scottish Premiership.

“Davis is straightforward enough. As far as I’m concerned, even at 34, he’ll be the best midfielder at Ibrox and very possibly the whole of the league,” he said in his Daily Record column.

“And, having played with him in a Rangers shirt, I feel reasonably qualified to make that assessment. This guy is an absolute dream to play beside with an incredible work ethic and desire to win. So he walks straight into that side.”

OPINION

Despite the fact that Davis may be 34-years-old, the need to win at this stage in his career has definitely not diminished. Many players at his age would be contemplating their last contract, but there seems to be no signs of that with Davis. Having only played six times in all competitions this season for Southampton, he is no doubt eager to get more minutes under his belt and play for a team who are in with a shout of winning a trophy. Some may argue that signing a player with limited appearances this term is a huge risk, but with Davis, what you see is what you get. Having played for Rangers previously, most of the fans will know what they are getting with the experienced midfielder. Ferguson claimed that he can become one – if not the best – midfielder in the Scottish Premiership, which may seem like a bold claim. However, on his good day, Davis is one of the best midfielders out there.
