Darrell Currie took to Twitter to dismiss talk that Rangers were paying attacker Jermain Defoe £65,000-per-week while he was on loan with them from Bournemouth.

The BT Sport broadcaster revealed that he had been told that Gers weren’t paying the forward that much a week and that the Cherries were paying the lion’s share of his wages.

Currie delivered a verdict on the deal Rangers had been able to agree for Defoe as he labelled it superb.

“There’s talk that Rangers are paying Defoe 65k per week,” tweeted Currie via his personal Twitter account.

“I’m told that’s not the case. Bournemouth are paying the lions share of the wages. Rangers have negotiated a superb deal…”

The Times reported on Saturday that Gers were paying Defoe £65,000-a-week, but has since deleted the statement.

OPINION

It raised a few eyebrows when it was reported that Defoe was being paid £65,000-a-week by the Gers, and given that the report is no longer up, clearly it was a mistake. However Currie has put the idea completely to bed about Defoe by giving his verdict on the deal and sharing what he has been told. While the 36-year-old forward will likely prove priceless if he delivers the goals his ability implies he capable of for Steven Gerrard’s side, paying him that amount would have been a questionable decision. Defoe has been prolific in the English Premier League during his career and does still seem fit enough to be a sensation north of the border in Scotland, yet paying him so much would have put some players’ noses out of joint. Gerrard seems to have built a positive atmosphere amongst his squad and he wouldn’t want there to be any discontent from his players ahead of the second half of the season.
