Alex Rae has heaped praise on Rangers for managing to secure the signing of Bournemouth striker Jermaine Defoe.

Rae hailed the club’s recent signing via his personal account on Twitter, remarking on how the ex-Tottenham attacker is a “good addition” to the club in this current transfer window.

The Gers confirmed the news that the 36-year-old had joined the club on an 18 month deal – subject to international clearance – via their official Twitter account and website on Sunday afternoon [6/01/19].

He said: “Rangers have just completed the signing of AFC Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe on loan another good addition.”

OPINION

Rae is right – Defoe is a great addition to the club, and there is no doubt that he will have a hugely positive effect on their season and their chances of winning the Scottish Premiership title. Yes, admittedly he has not been a regular for the Cherries this season – he has made eight appearances in all competitions – but there is no reason why he cannot fire on all cylinders during his time in Scotland. He has been a proven goalscorer no matter what team he has been at, and that is something that will surely stand Rangers in good stead this term. The title race is really opened up with this signing, and Celtic will now feel like they will have to match it, or even improve upon it. One thing is for sure though, the potential combination of Defoe and Alfredo Morelos up front would be lethal – so there is a lot for the fans to smile about this season.
