Celtic are still keen to sign a right-back before the end of this week, according to Darrell Currie.

The BT Sport host and journalist reported in a Twitter exchange with a supporter that was the club’s intention and he is convinced “it could still happen”.

Celtic have been linked with a string of right-backs this months include Porto’s Fernando Fonseca, Atalanta’s Timothy Castagne and Olympiacos’ Omar Elabdellaoui.

OPINION

It would be a massive boost to Celtic’s title hopes if they can recruit a quality right-back before the window shuts. Better still if a deal can be done – as Currie suggests – by Sunday. Certainly, the Hoops are in need of a major upgrade on the right side of their defence. Mikael Lustig has been integral to the club’s seven-in-a-row titles and domination of Scottish football in recent years, and his attitude and commitment to the cause is unquestionable. The mind is willing, but the body of the Sweden international is not quite in the shape that it once was. As has been clear to Bhoys for over a year, Lustig is on the downhill slope and, aged 32, there is no chance of him recovering the form that once made him the finest full-back in the SPL.  Of the players touted as Celtic targets, Fonseca looks like he could be a sound and affordable signing. A £2million reported fee is within Celtic’s range and the Portugal Under-21 international has the potential to develop quickly under Brendan Rodgers and his staff.
