Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is the top target of Leicester City’s owners as Foxes boss Claude Puel faces the axe after a series of poor performances and results, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim on their website that the French coach has been criticised for being too negative in his play and after an FA Cup defeat to Newport County and their Premier League loss against Southampton, could face the axe with another defeat versus Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.

It is stated that if he does depart then the Foxes top brass have lined up Celtic’s Northern Irish boss, said to be on £55,000-a-week at Parkhead, to take his place after impressing with the Hoops, with a £1million compensation fee for his signature.

Opinion

This is not the sort of thing that Celtic fans want to be waking up and hearing but as the Premier League goes from push to shove in the second half of the season, it should come as no surprise. Rodgers was heralded for his playing style with Swansea City and Liverpool and while his time at Anfield came to an acrimonious end, there will still be plenty of admirers at top flight sides. Leicester grew accustomed to exciting football under Claudio Ranieri but things appear to have gone a bit stale for the Foxes, both in terms of performances and results and so a change in the dugout is the only way to change that. Would Rodgers be tempted by the move? Money could be an influence, and the Premier League has plenty of that, but it is the nature of the project which would be the biggest factor. Leicester are the sort of side who offer scope for growth while being safe in a battle for survival and so could be exactly what the Hoops man wants from a return to England. Watch out Bhoys – the Foxes could well pounce.
