Aberdeen are interested in signing Celtic midfielder Jonny Hayes by Thursday, according to the Express.

The newspaper reports on their website that Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is also keen on taking the 31-year-old from the Hoops’ clutches, but a move could hinge on whether they are able to meet the fringe player’s wages.

The report adds that a potential switch for Hayes – who has only started three games all season for Celtic – could also hinge on Aberdeen player Gary Mackay-Steven, who has opened pre-contract talks with New York City and is in the last five months of his deal.

Good move for Celtic?

It would make sense for Celtic to get rid of Hayes, so yes, this would be a good move. Seeing as he has only started three games this season, it is obvious that he is not in Brendan Rodgers’ immediate plans for the club. Letting him leave for Aberdeen is the best thing that they could do for Hayes at this stage in his career, as it will obviously give him the first team opportunities that he no doubt craves.

Likely to happen?

This potential move really hangs in the balance. Who knows if Aberdeen would be able to meet Hayes’ wages? If they cannot, then it is likely that they will be priced out of a move, even if Mackay-Steven does end up leaving the club. This is a huge factor in whether Hayes will make the switch, so if Aberdeen really do want him, then they will have to find a way to match his wages. If that happens, then a move will definitely be on the cards.
