Rangers have taken New Zealand international goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic on trial, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that manager Steven Gerrard confirmed to them that the 27-year-old is at Ibrox for a week long trial with the Scottish giants in a bid to try and win a deal with the club.

Allan McGregor remains the undisputed number one for Gerrard, but Marinovic could potentially come in and put pressure on back ups Wes Foderingham and Robby McCrorie.

Marinovic was most recently with Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, having previously amassed vast European experience in the lower levels of German football.

Good move for Rangers?

This seems like a bit of a strange one. McGregor is obviously firmly entrenched as Gerrard’s first choice shot-stopper, but he’s adequately backed up by Foderingham, as well. Does Gerrard really have need of another back up ‘keeper? Besides, Marinovic’s record would suggest that he’s not exactly a top class player. Yes, he has significant international experience with New Zealand, but if he was Scottish he wouldn’t be anywhere near Alex McLeish’s radar. He has spent the majority of his career in the lower reaches of German football, which doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence in his abilities. He came in and played top flight football with Vancouver, of course, but there’s little to suggest he’d be a worthwhile signing for Rangers.

Likely to happen?

It all depends on what he does during his trial period, of course. If he blows Gerrard’s socks off then he’ll probably be brought in, but this isn’t one that fans should hold their breath for.
