Aston Villa are in talks with Bournemouth to sign defender Tyrone Mings but face competition from West Brom and Nottingham Forest, according to the Express and Star.

The regional newspaper claim Dean Smith’s side are working on signing the centre-back by Thursday night in what would be their third capture of the window.

The Express and Star report the west Midlands is the “most likely destination” for the giant centre-back, but West Brom are also in negotiations to sign him.

OPINION

Mings is just what Villa are looking for, as they look to plug the leaks in a back line that has proved the leakiest of all the clubs in the top 15 of the Championship this season. Mings has suffered from a demoralising series of serious injuries in recent seasons, but he is still only 25 and has showed in his two Premier League appearances for Bournemouth this season that he can be a dominant figure in the English second tier. The Cherries’ recent capture of Chris Mepham for £12million from Brentford has paved the way for Mings to find a new club, and Villa could be the beneficiaries of the availability of a colossal figure. Moreover, Mings can also slot in at left-back, the kind of versatility that Smith’s side are crying out for as they look to get their promotion bid back on track following a dispiriting series of results that has left them playing catch-up in the second half of the campaign.
