West Ham are willing to green light a mega-money spend to trigger the release clause of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Bleacher Report writer claims on his personal Twitter account that the Hammers are lining up the 22-year-old Uruguay international and are open to spending the £43.2million (€50million) clause in his contract to get him to east London.

The nine-cap star has netted nine times for Celta Vigo this season in his 18 La Liga appearances, while he has also managed to set his teammates up with five assists, although he is still waiting for his first goal for his country.

Opinion

What a statement of intent this would be from the Hammers, who were not shy with their cash in the summer either. It is clear that the Irons want Gomez to be the next marquee signing at the London Stadium and at 22-years-old he has so much potential to give whoever he plays for. His record in La Liga is a goal every other game – 27 in 54 outings – and that should give fans the indication that he has what it takes to be a successful signing in England. Of course there is a lot more physicality in the Premier League and it will be interesting to see how he acclimatises to the physical battles that he might not be used to in Spain, where the football is undoubtedly more about your technical ability. He has struggled to score against the top five of La Liga, with just one goal coming against Atletico, and so maybe there should be questions over whether he can perform in a more competitive division – especially for the money being touted.
