West Ham want to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud before tomorrow night’s transfer cut-off, according to talkSPORT.

The broadcaster claimed on their Twitter account early this afternoon (Wednesday) that the France international is a serious target for the Hammers in the final 36 hours of the window.

TalkSPORT explained that West Ham are weighing up whether to make a move for Giroud, who joined Chelsea from Arsenal in January of last year.

OPINION

Giroud is a proven Premier League performer – he has scored 77 goals in the competition at Chelsea and former club Arsenal – and a World Cup winner with a track record that demands respect. He is brilliant in the air, good with his back to goal and is a hundred times more durable than flaky Hammers tower forward Andy Carroll. He has started just six league games this season but a tally of five goals and five assists from 27 matches in all competitions is reasonable enough. The question is, should West Ham be offering a long-term contract to a player who turns 33 in September? The Hammers have enough veterans in their team, including the likes of Pablo Zabaleta and Samir Nasri. Surely, they should be looking at a younger striker colossus who can replace Carroll when his contract expires at the end of the season. Such a player is invaluable for a Premier League club, but West Ham need a younger man than Giroud.
