West Ham have tabled a contract offer to Sunderland striker Josh Maja and he is expected to make a decision today (Wednesday) on whether to accept it, according to a reliable journalist.

Guardian Sport’s deputy news editor Ed Aarons reported on his personal Twitter account that the forward, 20, also has offers on the table from Bordeaux and Cardiff City.

Maja may have spent this season in League One, but his potential has got plenty of elite clubs excited. The Black Cats academy product has banged in 16 goals from all competitions this season, with his strike against Scunthorpe last weekend his 15th in the league of the campaign. It could prove to be his last in a red-and-white shirt, too. With his contract at Sunderland set to expire at the end of the season, Maja is a man in demand as clubs try to land themselves a January bargain. Reports in France state the 20-year-old has agreed terms with Ligue 1 club Bordeaux, but that has not yet been confirmed. Could a last-gasp West Ham ambush be on the cards? A move to the Premier League big guns could be attractive for London-born Maja, especially if he harbours ambitions of being a force in the English top flight. With Marko Arnautovic, Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez likely to be gone by the summer at the latest, there will soon be plenty of centre-forward openings at the London Stadium.
