West Ham are close to selling Lucas Perez to Real Betis for £3.5million as they step up their pursuit of Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi, according to a Sky Sports journalist.

Correspondent Kaveh Solkehol reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday evening that a deal is “close” for Perez to leave but the club have rejected a £7million offer for his fellow front man Javier Hernandez.

Solkehol explained that the Hammers are exploring the possibility of signing Belgium international Batshuayi amid a blizzard of possible late centre-forward transfers at the London Stadium.

OPINION

Don’t go to bed yet, Hammers. That applies to both tonight and the night of deadline-day itself. West Ham, it appears, are going to be one of the busiest Premier League clubs in the next 24 hours or so as they looked to revitalise an attack that has been occasionally irrepressible, and occasionally wretched, as it was in last night’s defeat to Wolves. It’s fair to say Perez won’t be much missed by Irons. He has scored five goals from just five starts, but has rarely looked like being capable of consistently hurting Premier League defences. As for Hernandez, he is a fine penalty box poacher and his scoring record demands respect. But the Mexican is something of a one-trick pony and his game is ill suited to the physicality of the English league. He is far better off going to a club like Valencia, where he won’t need to play with his back to goal or have to out-muscle centre-backs to the same extent, and their playing style should better suit him.
