Cardiff City are working on a last-gasp deal to sign Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Welsh club are plotting a “dramatic deadline day move” for the Holland international, 24, as they look to ambush Real Betis’ swoop for the player.

The Sun report the Spanish outfit “looked in pole position” to land Janssen but Cardiff boss Neil Warnock is willing to match their offer of a six-month loan with an option to buy for £15million.

OPINION

Cardiff’s late interest in Janssen comes following the disappearance of the flight taking Emiliano Sala to the club. The Bluebirds badly need a striker who can score the goals to keep them in the Premier League. Is Janssen the man to do that? There must be some doubt. The forward was prolific in Holland and has plenty of international caps but he has had a miserable three seasons since joining Spurs for £17million, a fee no club is willing to come close to matching unless Jansson first starts banging them in again. The Dutchman has overcome a foot injury but there is no place for him at Tottenham despite the injury to Harry Kane, and even the recent absences also of Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli have failed to pave a way to a first-team squad return for the 2016 signing. Warnock is a master of reigniting waif and strays. He will need all his famed motivational powers to unlock the key to Janssen delivering the goods in the Premier League.
