Match of the Day pundit Jermaine Jenas has praised West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice for his excellent performance against Arsenal on Saturday.

The 19-year-old scored the game’s only goal as the Hammers ran out 1-0 winners at the London Stadium, and Jenas was significantly impressed by the youngster.

“He goes from strength to strength actually,” he said on Match of the Day [12/01; 21:25]. “Today he was ever-impressive again, and one of his best attributes was this – regaining possession for his side.

“Apart from his goal, spotting moments like that [Alexandre Lacazette interception] is what he’s brilliant at. 19-years-old, taking responsibility on the edge of his own 18-yard box, driving through the heart of the pitch and making things happen. It was a really complete display and a really mature display from him,” he finished.

OPINION

Jenas is absolutely spot on in his assessment of Rice, here. The teenager was superb against Arsenal, driving his team on and helping his side win the midfield battle against the Gunners. He has become undroppable for manager Manuel Pellegrini this season and is undoubtedly one of the first names on the Chilean’s team sheet. He was crucial in breaking up Arsenal’s attacks and quickly putting the Hammers onto the front foot on Saturday. His background is obviously more defensive than offensive – he can operate as a centre back as well – but he showed against Unai Emery’s side that he’s also massively influential going forward as well. His finish for the game’s only goal was absolutely superb and it left Bernd Leno rooted to the spot. He is a hugely impressive young man who is absolutely critical to everything West Ham are doing at the moment. If you didn’t believe the hype before Saturday you’re most certainly buying in now.
