There is no doubting that Tottenham are one of the best and most exciting teams in the Premier League right now, but there are questions about whether they can take themselves to the next level both domestically and in Europe.
After an exciting season which saw them dazzle in the Champions League and exceed expectations in the English top flight, things were expected to nosedive this campaign after a barren summer transfer window which saw not one new arrival through the door in north London.
The Lilywhites have also had to face another half a season without a permanent home, issues over their new stadium build dragging on, but it has not stopped success out on the pitch, Spurs qualifying for the Champions League knock out stage by the skin of their teeth and mentioned as an outsider in the Premier League title race.
After the disappointment of the summer, chairman Daniel Levy knows he has to take this club to the next level to keep not only the fans but manager Mauricio Pochettino happy, and the best signings are going to cost a pretty penny.
German publication Bild claim that Spurs have been in close pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, along with rivals Liverpool, a move which could reportedly cost any suitor a hefty £53.8million (€60million)
With 13 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions, as well as nine goals in 23 caps for Germany, the 22-year-old’s record speaks for itself – and he is only going to get better.
Spurs have shown they are not afraid to invest big money in future stars – record signing Davinson Sanchez a prime example – and while Werner would be a huge outlay, he would bury any doubts of Tottenham’s ambitions.
The German looks destined a future star and would bring a whole new wave of excitement to north London, even if he would be something of a big money gamble.
If Levy is serious about taking Tottenham to the next level, Werner can be his marquee signing to send a statement of serious intent to anyone who dared question his aspirations.
