Tottenham have made contact with Serie A side Torino over a transfer raid for defensive midfielder Soualiho Meite, according to reliable journalist Tancredi Palmeri.

The Italian reporter, who works for beIN Sports in Italy and has a proven track record of accurate reporting, claims on his personal Twitter account that the north London outfit are keen on the 24-year-old Frenchman, who only moved to Italy from Monaco in the summer.

Meite, a midfield enforcer, has made 20 appearances across all competitions for his new club this season, having played 52 times in France’s and 33 times in Belgium’s top flights.

Good move for Tottenham?

It might not be the big name signing that Spurs fans want to see this winter but with a transfer budget not quite up to the levels of the Premier League big boys, they have to find alternatives.

Meite is something of a left field move, having hardly proven himself in any of Europe’s top divisions, but there is obviously something that Tottenham see in him.

Perhaps it is the potential price tag, perhaps it his performances – either way, there will be a lot of fans in north London searching online for what he could bring to the side.

A powerful presence in the midfield, he would likely be a replacement for Mousa Dembele, offering energy as well as height in the centre.

Likely to happen?

Contact may have been made but it does not mean Torino are willing to sell up.

The player only recently moved to what is his fourth club in two and a half years on a mix of permanent deals and loans so he could well be reluctant to head out the exit door once again.

A lot of work needs to be done, but if Tottenham can convince both club and player then he should be over the line.
