Daniel Levy has slapped a world-record price tag on Christian Eriksen after fielding a call from a Real Madrid official, according to AS.

The Spanish newspaper claimed the Tottenham chairman has told the Spanish giants they would need to pay £224million to prise the Denmark international from the new White Hart Lane.

AS report the high price tag has temporarily diluted Real’s interest in Eriksen but the club are likely to reignite their interest given that he will enter the final year of his contract in the summer.

OPINION

Naturally, £224million is a pie-in-the-sky number that Real would have no intention of paying. Or, anywhere near. It is a fee that comfortably dwarfs the world-record £198million Paris Saint-Germain paid Barcelona for Neymar at the start of last season. Eriksen is a mighty fine player, but he is no Neymar and certainly wouldn’t come anywhere near to shifting the number of shirts and associated merchandise of the Brazilian master. Levy is simply putting to bed any chances of Real landing one of Spurs’ two best outstanding players – the other is Harry Kane – this month. But the north Londoners face a major battle in the summer to hang on to the great Dane. Once he enters the final year of his deal, that spells trouble, and Levy will know that better than anyone. A fee of around £80million would appear to be a realistic one at around that point for a player at a peak who has achieved great things in the Premier League and Champions League, and would walk into most sides in the world.
