Tottenham are working on a deal to sign Adrien Rabiot from Paris Saint-Germain this month after holding talks with his agent, according to Sport.

The Spanish newspaper claim the London club are one of four clubs to have held talks with the France international’s representatives after he failed to sign a pre-contract agreement with Barcelona.

Sport report that Tottenham are willing to reach an agreement with PSG and giant midfielder Rabiot to formalise a permanent transfer in the January window.

Good move for Tottenham?

Without a doubt. For a big-money fee, the midfield colossus, who stands at 6ft 3in (source: Transfermarkt) would be a mighty fine signing. For a bargain price in January, ahead of the expiry of his contract in the summer, it would be a sensational coup for Spurs as they scour the market for a central midfielder who can fill the boots of exit-bound Mousa Dembele. Aged 23, Rabiot has a truck-load of top-level experience, including six caps for the World Cup winners and plenty of Champions League appearances. Technically gifted, strong and very difficult to knock off the ball, he would be the ideal replacement for Dembele. He is left-footed, too, and has a decent record of scoring important goals for PSG.

Likely to happen?

It is encouraging for Lilywhites that Spurs are working on a deal, but Barcelona are still clear favourites to sign Rabiot even though a formal agreement is not yet in place. The player appears miffed the Spanish giants want to hold off until the summer, and he has responded by fluttering his eyelashes at other admirers. Tottenham shouldn’t be ruled out of the reckoning, but it is still a long shot.
