West Brom are set to appoint former Manchester Unites shot stopper Gary Walsh as a new goalkeeping coach just months after he was sacked by midlands rivals Aston Villa, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the Baggies are set to welcome Walsh and secure a reunion with former teammate Darren Moore, having found himself without a job after his exit from Villa back in October.

Walsh, who started his playing career at Old Trafford in the 80s, was one of a number of staff to leave the Villans alongside Steve Bruce, and was a teammate of Moore’s at Bradford City, both signing for the club in 1997.

Opinion

An experienced head with good experience of not only the Championship but the manager, the midlands and the club’s first choice shot stopper Sam Johnstone, who was at Villa on loan last season. The man between the sticks has not done an an awful lot wrong this season but there might well be some improvements that Moore feels a fresh set of eyes can bring to his game. It is a strange time to bring a new member of staff into the setup but it demonstrates that Moore is always looking for ways to boost his side’s hopes and gain an advantage. It might not be the January signing that fans hoped for or expected but it should make a minor difference to the performances of Johnstone as the last line of defence. Still, there is more business to be done this month and Moore will not want to be caught out by his rivals.
