Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has been blown away by how Tottenham have been able to keep up with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, despite not spending any money in the summer.

Spurs went 3-0 up within 25 minutes against Cardiff on Tuesday thanks to some excellent goals from Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min, and Lineker tweeted how he was mightily impressed by them.

Lineker dubbed manager Mauricio Pochettino “Punchettino” during the clash after being wowed by the exploits of the team.

He said via his personal Twitter account: “In reality, it’s quite something that Spurs are on the heels of the Premier League’s finest, given the vast difference in expenditure between them and Liverpool and Manchester City. Punchettino.”

OPINION

Lineker is right – the way Tottenham have been able to keep hot on the heels of their Premier League rivals really is quite something. Both Liverpool and Manchester City spent vast amounts in the summer transfer window, whereas Spurs opted to spend zilch – and look where it has got them. They may have been criticised by many for not bringing any new players in – after all, how would they possibly win the title with the same group of players – but they have certainly proved any doubters wrong by being in touching distance of the summit. Spending a lot of money does not necessarily guarantee success, especially in Tottenham’s case. Take a look at the likes of Chelsea and West Ham – their big expenditure has not really done them dividends this term. They must be proud of how they have performed, as their players have really stepped it up in the face of the doubters.
