Christian Eriksen has suggested that he is involved in ‘good discussions’ with Tottenham over his future at the club, and has dismissed reports linking him to Real Madrid as rumours.

The Danish international has yet to agree a new contract with Spurs and has been linked with a move to the Spanish giants, as reported by the Independent, but gave a hopeful message to fans following his side’s 1-0 win over Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Speaking to Danish outlet TV3 Sport, as quoted by B.T., the 26-year-old said: “It is not the first time that there have been rumours, and when the newspapers write something it is not something we are masters of, and if there is nothing concrete, then I would just be commenting on rumours.

“I think people know what I want, and I know what they [Tottenham] would like. There is a nice dialogue so there is nothing there.”

OPINION

Nothing is concrete of course, but this is the kind of development that Spurs fans will have been praying for. The Dane is one of, if not the, most influential player in Tottenham’s attacking lineup and keeping hold of him could be key to any future title aspirations they might have. Rumours will continue to persist while a contract remains unsigned, but the fact that channels of communication remain open, and that Eriksen suggests that things are moving in a positive direction, must surely give the club some hope. To secure the 26-year-old’s future, Spurs are surely going to have to massively up his salary, especially with the likes of Madrid circling, but if he is happy in London, and if the club are committed to making sure he stays then hopes will be high of a positive resolution. Losing him would be one thing but finding a replacement would be a something else entirely, and Tottenham will be fully aware of just how crucial he is.
