Chelsea and Manchester United will go toe to toe to land Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen at the end of the season, according the Express.

Both clubs have been encouraged by Real Madrid supposedly dropping their interest in the Dane, and Spurs’ top four rivals are looking to capitalise on the protracted wrangle to extend his £75,000-a-week contract, which runs out in June 2020.

It is also understood that Spurs could face interest from Bayern Munich and PSG, but it is believed that the 26-year-old is happy in London and would prefer to stay in the capital, potentially giving Chelsea the advantage.

Good move for Spurs?

Definitely not. In fact, as far as transfers go, losing Eriksen to the two sides who are probably closest to challenging Spurs for third would be an absolute disaster. The Dane is critical to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and the prospect of losing him will be one that Spurs are worried about enough already without factoring in how much better he could make one of their closest rivals. There are literally no silver linings to this one, and the sooner Tottenham can reach some kind of agreement with their talismanic playmaker, the better for the club.

Likely to happen?

Probably not, in truth. Tottenham may not spend big, but they are shrewd when it comes to business, and are a big enough club now to fend off most approaches from teams of a similar ilk. If the Real Madrid’s or Barcelona’s of this world came knocking int could be harder to say no, but for all of Chelsea and United’s financial clout, Spurs will feel that they are strong enough to prevent a shock move for Eriksen.
