Newcastle United sunk to a disappointing 2-0 loss to Watford in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, so it is safe to say that the fans are not holding out much hope for their next Premier League clash against Manchester City on Tuesday.

Andre Gray and Isaac Success put the Magpies to the sword at the weekend after some poor defending from centre-back Jamaal Lascelles in particular, however, the closest United did come was when Javier Manquillo had an effort cleared off the line by Ben Wilmot.

Rafa Benitez’ team selection no doubt highlighted the importance of the Premier League over the FA Cup, as seven changes were made – but in order to have a fighting chance against City, he will need to rotate his starting XI once again.

This includes the likes of Freddie Woodman and Lascelles, who must be dropped to accommodate others.

As mentioned above, Woodman – despite making some good saves on Saturday – must make way for number one Martin Dubravka.

The next two changes must come in the defence, where Benitez opted for a back five with two wing-backs. Mainstay Lascelles – who has made 20 appearances in total this season – must be set for the chopping block after such a woeful performance of which ultimately led to the two goals.

Ciaran Clark, who despite not being that bad on Saturday, needs to be dropped to adopt a tactical change by the manager, who must bring DeAndre Yedlin in on the right instead of having three centre-backs.

Kenedy made his first start in a long while for this fixture, but it was certainly not one that the fans had been waiting for – it was uninspired, and he kept on getting dispossessed. He must be axed as soon as possible, in order for Ayoze Perez to come in and add that attacking edge.

The last and final change should come up front, where Salomon Rondon must return to his usual place, as it is clear that Joselu is not capable of leading the line.

If Benitez makes the right calls regarding his starting XI on Tuesday, then his team would be able to defy the odds at St James’ Park and actually get a point from their clash with the in-form Man City.
