Tottenham have been hit by a huge blow after Christian Eriksen snubbed their new contract offer, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claim Spurs table a fresh offer to the Denmark international last month but he failed to accept it and is “stalling” on committing to a new deal.

The Standard report Tottenham are “growing twitchy” at Eriksen’s situation as they hope to secure him to a long-term agreement to replace his current £75,000-a-week contract, which expires in the summer of 2020.

OPINION

It would be overstating things to claim the writing is on the wall for Eriksen’s Spurs career and that he will inevitably quit for one of Europe’s elite clubs at the end of the season. But, make no mistake about it. The great Dane’s failure to accept the massive new offer tabled by the Londoners is a massive problem for the club. Eriksen is indisputably one of the outstanding players in the Premier League and he would walk into most teams on the planet. His vision, technical expertise and ability to control a game and create and score goals makes him a hugely attractive proposition for any club with immense financial resources looking for a world-class playmaker. Eriksen is in such a strong negotiating position and that will only be enhanced as the days tick down on his current contract. Once he enters the final 12 months of the current deal,  then Spurs are in a really difficult position and will have to weigh up whether to cash in on him or risk losing a star man for nothing a year later.
