Newcastle United striker Elias Sorensen has signed a new three-and-a-half year contract with the club.

The Magpies confirmed the deal via their official club website on Monday afternoon, with the teenage Dane now tied to Tyneside until 2022.

The club will also have the option of extending his spell should they wish to.

The 19-year-old has registered 19 strikes during the first half of the Premier League 2 season, and currently sits top of the goalscoring charts after finding the net against Sunderland last week.

Despite having not featured for the first team yet, the youth international is highly thought of in the north east, and was keen to express his delight at teh contract.

Speaking to NUFC TV, he said: “It means a lot – I’ve worked hard for it over the last three years or so and I’m delighted to sign with such a massive club.”

OPINION

Securing Sorensen’s future at Newcastle could be one of the smartest pieces of business the club has conducted in a while. The young Dane is on fire this season, and many Toon fans have gone as far as to suggest that he should be give an opportunity in the first team. Rafa Benitez will be reluctant to rush his development, but if he keeps playing the wha he is, it’s going to become increasingly difficult to ignore him. The Magpies need goals, and he has plenty of them so far this season, and depending on January transfer activity, he may get his chance before the campaign is through. In the meantime, making sure that Sorensen is not snapped up by a bigger club is a huge positive, and one that will allow him to get his head down and continue his impressive development at St. James’ Park. Newcastle fans love a number nine, and this boy could be their next great one.
