Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is keen on signing two more players in the late hours of deadline day after seeing a pair of arrivals already through the door on Thursday, according to north east journalist Miles Starforth.

The reporter for Tyne and Wear based newspaper Shields Gazette claims in the paper’s live transfer deadline day blog on their website that after seeing Miguel Almiron and Antonio Barreca join the Magpies permanently and on loan respectively, Benitez is still looking to snap up another pair of signings later on in the day.

It is stated that the Spanish boss is keen on recruiting a new winger to bolster his options out wide while another midfielder could be on his way to Tyneside which would allow Isaac Hayden to secure the move he desires.

Opinion

Could this be the greatest deadline day in the history of all Newcastle United fans? After so many seasons watching on from the sidelines as their rivals splash the cash on new and exciting talent they have finally made huge waves themselves with Almiron – and it appears as though things might not be over at St James’ Park just yet. A new winger would be the icing on the cake for the Magpies, who have looked a little lacklustre out wide, while a new midfielder is unlikely to be a priority for too many. Sean Longstaff has emerged as a top quality talent while Ki Seung-yung, Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey are all awaiting their comeback from injury. What might be a surprise is how many fans will want to keep Isaac Hayden after his impressive performances of late, despite confirming his desire to leave Tyneside for a club further south. It would be a blow to lose him and so maybe one more signing is realistic rather than two.
