Newcastle United fans’ hearts must have sank when they saw that Joselu had been chosen to lead the line against Watford on Saturday ahead of Salomon Rondon. It’s understandable that Rafa Benitez wants to prioritise the league over the cup, but the Spanish striker is generally so poor that it’s a wonder he gets any game time at all. The 28-year-old has scored just three goals all season, but it’s all-round lack of quality that is a real worry. Whereas his Venezuelan counterpart holds up play and constantly looks to bring those around him into the picture, Joselu spends most of his time isolated and looking a little bit lost up front by himself. Saturday’s clash with the Hornets was no different, and with him leading the line, Newcastle looked devoid of any creativity or cutting edge in the first half. It’s hard to see how he continually is given chances by Benitez, and the answer must surely be that beggars can’t be choosers. If the Magpies were to sign another forward this month it would presumably herald the end for the lacklustre forward, and certainly not before time. We’re at a point now where Joselu is becoming a joke figure amongst fans, and at that point, it’s time to get rid.
