Newcastle United and Atlanta United have agreed a deal over Miguel Almiron, with the player set to fly to Tyneside for a medical, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The local American outlet suggests that a source close to the player has disclosed that an agreement has been met for the MLS’ player of the year, although the financial terms of the deal remain unknown.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie said it was “likely to be a club record transfer”.

It is now expected that the Paraguayan international, who has 21 goals in his last two seasons in the US, will fly to England to complete a medical and tie up the deal.

Good move for Newcastle?

Absolutely. This is the deal that Magpies’ fans have been hoping and praying for since the beginning of the window, and it appears to be closer than ever to going through. Almiron is a real creative livewire, and will bring a spark that the Toon Army have been lacking for far too long. At 24, he is just reaching his prime, and in truth, has been far too good for the MLS in recent years. Now is his chance to show what he can do on a global stage, and Newcastle fans will be salivating.

Likely to happen?

It’s been rumbling on forever, but it now seems closer than it has done up until now. Newcastle fans won’t believe it until they see the South American stood outside St. James’ with a black and white scarf, but it’s looking evermore likely, and if the report is true, then it’s just a matter of passing a medical and signing on the dotted line.
