It’s not rocket science. If you have a squad that is evidently not good enough for the Premier League, and you are given a month in the middle of the season to improve that squad by spending a bit of money, you should really be looking to splash the cash.

Newcastle United are only out of the relegation zone by virtue of the fact that there are three teams even more woeful than they are, and that they have a world class manager in Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard made no secret of the fact that he wanted to recruit this January to really help his side propel themselves away from the drop zone, but with deadline day edging ever closer, the Magpies are still yet to make a signing.

One man they have been repeatedly linked with, as reported by the Chronicle, has been Miguel Almiron of Atlanta United. The Paraguayan international was one of the MLS’ best players last year, and was earmarked early on as the ideal creative spark needed to inject some much needed imagination into the Toon Army’s squad.

The saga has rumbled on for weeks with little meaningful progress towards a decent resolution, and now Newcastle fans will not be surprised to hear that Napoli have posited an interest in the 24-year-old.

According to The Guardian’s Deputy News Editor Ed Aarons, the Italian giants are keen to bring the playmaker to Serie A, and if they succeed it could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Benitez.

Time and time again, the Spaniard sees his transfer plans blocked and stunted by the thriftiness of a disinterested owner, and at what point does he wash his hands of the situation and look elsewhere for a job that actually offers some kind of reward for his hard work?

For Newcastle fans, the worry will be that the Almiron wrangle is one debacle too far.
